The Origins of Pride Month

Pride Month is celebrated in June to commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which took place in New York City in June 1969. The Pride Flag: A Symbol of Unity and Diversity

The original Pride flag was created by artist and activist Gilbert Baker in 1978. Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States, encouraged Baker to design a symbol of pride and hope for the LGBTQ+ community. Baker's design featured eight colors, each with its own meaning:

• Hot Pink: Sex
• Red: Life
• Orange: Healing
• Yellow: Sunlight
• Green: Nature
• Turquoise: Magic/Art
• Indigo: Serenity
• Violet: Spirit

Over time, the flag has evolved. The most commonly used version today features six colors, with hot pink and turquoise removed for practical reasons, and indigo replaced with blue. Each color remains a powerful representation of the community's diversity and unity.

In recent years, additional flags have been created to represent different identities within the LGBTQ+ community, including the Progress Pride flag, which adds a chevron of black and brown stripes to honor people of color, and pink, light blue, and white stripes to represent the transgender community.
